Miss Gaural Patel is one of those exceptional doctors. Throughout my care she has remained kind and understanding and is always more than willing to listen to any concerns or anxieties (or even the odd bad joke). Having had surgery last New Years Eve, she was willing to stay behind and wait until all of us who had surgery that day had recovered and were ready to go home. Her care also extended to her staff who she had brought in biscuits to say 'thank you '(which were also shared with us few remaining patients). Just one example of her caring and compassionate nature. I am very pleased with the surgical procedure and it has all healed beautifully with minimal scaring. I truly cannot sing her praises enough and it is obvious how wonderful she is by how happy and loyal her team are; who also deliver a very high standard of care, so thank you so much. I would not hesitate in recommending Miss Patel and we are very fortunate to have such a talented and genuinely lovely person.

Miss Patel was very approachable about any of my worries she explained every detail of the operation and aftercare. I was dealt with very quickly and treated extremely well at all stages. I was very lucky to be cleared of breast cancer after the operation which was all dealt with in under 3 months from my doctors referral. I am now happy to be being monitored for the next 5 years and feel if I have any worries or problems in the future Miss Patel and the team will be there to settle them. Thanks to everyone at the Breast Unit at MK University Hospital for their support and care during my treatment.

Miss Patel is so kind and made me feel safe and relaxed at every stage. My operation went to plan and I have healed really well. I love the way she really takes time to explain everything and takes a holistic approach to my health care. She is obviously very well liked by her colleagues, they come across as a very happy and united team. I am looking forward to the future now and feel so lucky and grateful to her for everything she has done for me.

In Nov 2019 I had Bilateral Mastectomy at Milton Keynes Hospital. I consider myself immensely fortunate that I had Ms Patel as my surgeon. From my first consultation, I was made to feel completely at ease. nothing was too much trouble, no question too insignificant to answer. Both my husband and I felt our fears and worries were very important to her. A previous review called her an angel and I share that view. After my operation she phoned my husband to say all had gone well, which was a huge relief to him. The whole team of breast nurses at the centre were very caring and helpful. I have been for my final check-up with the lovely Ms Patel and feel happy in the knowledge that I can contact her should there be any future problems. Joy Thorne

Profile

Miss Patel joined the Milton Keynes team in November 2018. She is delighted to return to the area, following her medical degree at Oxford University (where she also gained an honours degree focussing on cognitive neurosciences) and Foundation training in Buckinghamshire
She has worked over 5 continents, absorbing tips and tricks from many gifted trainers, and completed her core surgical training in London (Chelsea and Westminster hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital). Higher surgical training took her to Wales and an inspirational observership at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Pre-appointment, she was awarded a highly competitive National Oncoplastic TIG fellowship year at Broomfield Hospital and St Andrews Plastics Unit, Chelmsford. Here, she worked alongside internationally respected surgeons in order to train in all aspects of oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery including therapeutic mammaplasty, skin sparing mastectomy for implant and flap reconstruction, breast reductions/mastopexies, nipple reconstruction and areolar tattooing. She also took on a key organisational role for the regional risk reducing mastectomy multidisciplinary meeting, which brought together geneticists, psychologists, oncologists, surgeons and breast reconstruction nurses to allow comprehensive assessment and acceptable options for ladies with high risk of developing breast cancer. She finished off her training with a travelling fellowship to Paris, working under the expert supervision of Krishna Clough and Isabel Safardi who helped hone her oncoplastic –aesthetic sense and expanded applications of fat grafting in their technically superb, yet extremely patient centred way.
Since practicing in Milton Keynes she continues to contribute to the academic community, in the form of international conference posters and peer reviewed publications, but is increasingly focussing on holistic care of her patients. She works alongside the Macmillan wellbeing team, to ensure that a diagnosis of cancer can be used positively to improve your quality of life, with access to hospital and community resources encompassing physical health but also addressing emotional and psychosocial needs that can be neglected. You will also find her out and about, both in the hospital and Milton Keynes community, promoting breast awareness with the mammographers and breast specialist nurses, through joint events with local companies and organisations. She hopes to educate and empower both women and men about breast health with the help of her colleagues, media and of course Betty Boob (our realistic mannequin who generously allows everyone to gain confidence with breast examination on her!)
She has a special interest in leadership and the hidden curriculum where norms, values and beliefs, as well as knowledge are passed on unwittingly as well as consciously. She hopes that early development of these ideas with medical students and trainees from both Buckingham and Oxford Universities, will encourage self-awareness and understanding of others. These, together with empathy and kindness, help build the resilience required to complete the demands of higher training, where mind, body and spirit can be relentlessly tested in order to allow oneself the privilege of being someone’s doctor, without losing the qualities of a being a fellow human being.
